Matthew Mell, M.D., M.S., FACS, renowned National expert in innovation of disease surveillance and screening, serves as the Chief Medical Officer for Illuminate. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and trained in General Surgery and Transplantation at Stanford University. He also completed advanced training in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University of Wisconsin.
Over his 30-year distinguished career, he has worked across the spectrum of healthcare systems including serving for twelve years at Kaiser Permanente and then returning to academics at the University of Wisconsin, Stanford University, and University of California Davis. While on the Stanford faculty received his M.S. degree in Health Services Research and Policy.
Dr. Mell has held numerous important health system leadership roles including for eight years as the Co-Chair and Medical Director of all Outpatient Specialty Clinic Operations at Stanford and as the immediate past Chief of Vascular Surgery and the Medical Director of the Vascular Center at UC Davis where he recently transitioned to Professor Emeritus.
He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Society of Vascular Surgery, and elected to membership of the prestigious American Surgical Association. Dr. Mell’s work in disease screening and surveillance has been instrumental in driving change at the Federal level for aortic aneurysms, contributed to setting National Society guidelines for optimizing care, and is often cited as major drivers of innovation in surgical disease.
